Sharing Silverstein with my daughter

My love of poetry was first sparked by the humorous writings of Shel Silverstein. I find his work both lighthearted and funny, as well as deeply moving and inspiring.  My own daughter is now old enough to enjoy the jokes and humor, and I hope she’s taking in the deeper messages as well.

Silverstein’s magic way with words is incomparable, and while I have many favorites, this one rises to the top:

When I am gone what will you do?
Who will write and draw for you?
Someone smarter—someone new?
Someone better—maybe YOU!

-Shel Silverstein

It’s messages like this that are woven into each book, into each poem, that I’ll gladly share with my child and those I teach for years to come.
